Proper Hand Hygiene: Handwashing 101

Your hands play a big part in the transmission of bacteria and viruses, so proper hand hygiene is one way we can all work to prevent the spread of germs and illness.

The best, most effective way to clean your hands is by handwashing with soap and water.

With handwashing, technique is key. You should run your hands under clean water, apply soap, and rub your hands together for a minimum of 20 seconds. Make sure to get in between your fingers, the backs of your hands, and under your fingernails.

Want to know how long to wash your hands? It is recommended the process should take at least 20 seconds or equivalent to the time it takes to sing 'Happy Birthday.’ When you’ve washed your hands, you should use a clean towel, disposable paper towel, or hand dryer to dry your hands properly.
