Prof. Fiachra Cooke

Professor Fiachra Cook is now attending UPMC Whitfield Hospital. Prof. Cooke was appointed as a Consultant General & Colorectal Surgeon in University Hospital Waterford in June 2010 where he continues as chairman of the department of general surgery.

Fiachra Cooke graduated with honours from University College Galway in 1997. He was awarded his Doctor of Medicine in 2004 before completing higher specialist training in general and colorectal surgery in Ireland. He undertook fellowship training in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery and Advanced Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in Western Australia, working in Nobel Laureate Barry Marshall’s unit in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth. He came in first place and was awarded the ASGBI GOLD MEDAL in the intercollegiate fellowship exam in general surgery for Great Britain and Ireland in 2008.

Prof. Cooke was appointed an honorary associate clinical professor of the RCSI in 2018. He is the lead clinician for the south east rectal cancer and the south east cancer centre representative on the NCCP Rectal Cancer working group. He is the clinical lead for endoscopy in UHW and leads the National Bowel Cancer Screening Service in Waterford. He has recently completed his robotic proctored training programme in general and colorectal surgery.
