Professor John Cooke sees patients in an out-patient department setting in UPMC Whitfield Hospital.

Professor John Cooke is a Consultant Geriatrician and Stroke Physician at University Hospital Waterford, where he has been in substantive consultant practice since completing higher specialist training in Geriatric Medicine in 2014. His specialist training included a fellowship in gerontology and stroke medicine at King’s College Hospital, London.

He holds a PhD and remains actively involved in research, supervising doctoral and postgraduate students across a range of clinical and educational topics. His research interests include resistance-based exercise combined with protein supplementation in older adults, as well as medical education.

Prof. Cooke has held several clinical leadership roles, including serving as the foundation Clinical Lead for the Waterford Integrated Care for Older People (WICOP) programme. He currently holds a national leadership position relating to postgraduate medical education and training as well as Clinical Professorships at University College Cork and RCSI, and an honorary professorship at SETU.

Prof. Cooke welcomes referrals for older adults with a broad variety of conditions including:

  • Frailty and emerging frailty
  • Falls and “funny turns,” including suspected syncope and transient ischaemic attack
  • Memory disorders, including dementia
  • Movement disorders, including tremor and Parkinson’s disease
  • Complex general medical conditions in older adults
  • Assessment and management of polypharmacy
