Professional ProfileMs. Niamh Foley, a West Waterford native, graduated from Trinity College Dublin. She subsequently pursued both basic and higher specialist training through the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Her dedication to academic excellence is further highlighted by a two year research MD from University College Cork, complemented by an LL.M in Medical Law and Ethics from the University of Edinburgh.
Following her specialist training, Ms. Foley advanced her clinical expertise at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, participating in North America's largest fellowship programme for colorectal surgery. This experience equipped her with specialised skills in minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Ms. Foley is committed to excellence in patient care.
Currently based at University Hospital Waterford, Ms. Foley offers a broad spectrum of colorectal and general surgical treatments. Her clinical interests include proctology, colorectal cancer, minimally invasive hernia repair, gallbladder surgery, and advanced polyp management through endoscopy. Her proficiency also extends to the management of benign and malignant bowel conditions and faecal incontinence.
Ms. Foley was an active member of the Dukes Club, a trainee organisation affiliated with the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland. In this role, she served as the Ireland regional representative and the Emergency General Surgery representative, underscoring her leadership within the surgical community.
Outside of her clinical and surgical duties, Ms. Foley is an avid runner and cyclist, having completed her first marathon in Cincinnati in 2023.
