Prof. Peter Neary

Professional ProfileSince Professor Neary's appointment as the Inaugural Professorial Chair of Surgical Oncology/Academic Head of Department in University Hospital Waterford and University College Cork in September 2018, he has developed a well-established general surgery, endoscopic and colorectal practice.
Professor Neary graduated in University College Cork in 2005. He spent twelve years training in Ireland attaining experience in all aspects of general and colorectal practice. Following completion of training through the specialist register scheme in Ireland, he attended the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio (one of the world’s leading colorectal units) on fellowship.
Professor Neary is a specialist in anorectal disorders, diagnostic and complex upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, colorectal cancer management, colorectal polyp management, inflammatory bowel disease, gallbladder disease, abdominal wall hernias and minimally invasive surgery. Professor Neary prides himself in listening to patients and working with them, their families, and doctors to formulate treatment plans with their goals in mind.
Additionally, Professor Neary has huge interest in research. He attained a doctorate in University College Cork in 2011, examining inflammatory pathways of colon cancer development in both a basic science and clinical trial setting. He supervises PhD and Masters Students. He has extensively published on his areas of expertise including leading on numerous clinical trials and has successfully been awarded over €6.5 million in grant funding. He works as journal specialist editor and reviews papers for numerous journals.
Professor Neary also has a keen interest in education. He attained a Masters in Leadership and Healthcare Professions Education in the RCSI. He teaches at undergraduate and postgraduate level on a regular basis as well as provides surgical courses on his areas of expertise.
Professor Neary has extensive management experience having attained a Masters in Healthcare Management in University College Dublin. He sits on the Executive Medical Board in University Hospital Waterford as South East Cancer Governance Clinical Lead. In addition, he is on the Cohort Research Committee of the European Society of Coloproctology in addition to leading a busy clinical practice and academic practice in University Hospital Waterford and University College Cork. He was also the lead clinician in bringing robotics to University Hospital Waterford.
