Dr. Killian Nugent

Professional ProfileDr. Killian Nugent is a Consultant Radiation Oncologist at the Bon Secours Radiotherapy Centre Cork in partnership with UPMC Hillman Cancer Centre, having joined the team in July 2026.
Dr. Nugent graduated from Trinity College Dublin with honours in 2011. He completed general professional training at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin and gained membership to the Royal College of Physicians in 2014. He completed specialist training in Radiation Oncology at St. Luke’s Radiation Oncology Network, Dublin. He became a Fellow of the Faculty of Radiology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2020 and thereafter joined Oxford University Faculty of Oncology in 2022. During his time in Oxford, he completed a Clinical Research Fellowship in advanced radiation techniques particularly focusing on MRI and stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR). He returned from the U.K. in 2023 and took up a post as a Consultant Radiation Oncologist in Cork University Hospital in October 2023.
He has a strong interest in clinical research. Over the past five years, he has authored several first-author publications on hypofractionated breast radiotherapy, pancreatic SABR, prostate SABR, and the oligometastatic paradigm. His work has been published in The Breast, Advances in Radiation Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics, and Acta Oncologica. His research has also been presented at ASTRO and ESTRO international conferences.
Dr. Nugent is actively involved in radiation oncology training in Ireland and serves as the local training coordinator for Specialist Registrars on the Radiation Oncology Training programme of the Faculty of Radiologists. He contributes as a lecturer to both the specialist training programme and the radiation therapy master’s programme at UCC. In 2026, he was appointed Senior Lecturer at UCC and is a member of the UCC Research Mentorship Training Committee.
He also has a particular focus on clinical trials and is a member of Clinical Trials Ireland, UCC Cancer Trials Group, and IRROG. He is a member of the Cancer Trials Ireland Breast and Head and Neck group. He has successfully led the set-up and activation of multiple clinical trials within his department and serves as a principal investigator for the Head and Neck PRESERVE trial and the upcoming FAST-Forward Boost trial, evaluating hypofractionated breast radiotherapy.
