Dr. Micheál O’Cathail

Professional ProfileDr. O’Cathail is an experienced Radiation Oncologist with extensive national and international experience. He is a Cork native, who graduated from University College Cork in 2009. He completed his Basic Specialist Medical Training in Cork before moving to the U.K. in 2013 to pursue higher specialist training in Radiation and Clinical Oncology.
He was conferred as a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR Clinical Oncology) in 2016 and completed his speciality training in 2019. In 2017, he undertook a two year fellowship in advanced radiation techniques with a focus on Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). During this time he undertook original research, leading to the award of a research Masters from the University of Nottingham.
He was appointed as a Consultant Clinical Oncologist in Nottingham in 2019 and in 2021, he was appointed as Head of Department of Oncology & Radiotherapy. In November 2023, he took up a temporary post in Dunedin, New Zealand, where he gained further SRS experience in the national radiosurgery unit.
Dr. O’Cathail returned to Cork as a Consultant Radiation Oncologist in August 2024 where he holds a substantive appointment in CUH and subsequently joined the team at the Bon Secours Radiotherapy Cork in Partnership with UPMC Hillman Cancer Centre in July 2025. He is core member of the Prostate cancer, Neuro-oncology, Thyroid and Sarcoma MDMs in CUH. He has particular interest in the use of stereotactic radiotherapy for the treatment of brain tumours and oligo-metastatic disease.
He is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer with UCC and has a keen interest in medical education and clinical trials. He has published and presented his own research extensively and is actively involved in opening and recruiting to clinical trials in Cork.
