Dr. Michael Ryan

Dr. Michael Ryan is a GP with specialist interest in Sports and Exercise Medicine. He is awaiting approval on to the Specialist Register in Ireland as a Consultant Sports and Exercise Physician. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports Medicine in Ireland and the Royal Australian College of General Practice. He returned to Ireland from Australia in 2022, where he worked with professional AFL, Rugby Union, and Rugby League.

Dr. Ryan graduated from Medicine at UCD in 2009 and relocated to Melbourne in 2010. He undertook further training in General Practice in rural Australia and completed a Masters in Sports Medicine from the University of Queensland in 2017. Since 2022, he has been on the Higher Specialist Training Program for Sports and Exercise Medicine in Ireland.

While in Australia, Dr. Ryan was Head Doctor for Melbourne Football Club AFLW, Matchday Doctor, and Head Injury Analyst for Melbourne Rebels Super Rugby and Matchday Doctor for the Melbourne Rebels Super W women’s team. He was Matchday Doctor for Melbourne Storm in the NRL. Dr. Ryan was also Doctor on the athletics track at the Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast in 2018. Dr. Ryan’s current sports work includes Louth GAA Men’s Senior Football and Kildare Senior Hurling. He has travelled with the Irish boxing team and was Doctor for the Irish Open Tennis in 2024.

Dr. Ryan is passionate about enabling his patients to return to physical activity and sport and is a huge advocate for the benefits of exercise on both physical and mental health. He specialises in the management of acute and overuse injuries in both adults and children, from recreational to elite athletes. He also has significant experience in managing pain, concussion, occupation-related injuries and chronic disease.

His holistic lifestyle approach focuses on optimising nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress management as means to optimising health outcomes.
