UPMC Enhances Cancer Care in the South East with €7.8 Million Investment

20 November 2023 – UPMC is making a significant stride in enhancing cancer care in the South East region with the installation of two state-of-the-art radiotherapy machines to treat cancer patients at UPMC Whitfield Hospital. The linear accelerators, representing a €7.8 million investment, underscore UPMC’s commitment to providing advanced, accessible oncology services to the local community. The new equipment not only represents an upgrade to the radiotherapy department, but also a crucial step in ensuring that oncology patients receive the highest quality care close to home.

The UPMC Hillman Cancer Centre, located at UPMC Whitfield Hospital, Waterford, serves as a hub for comprehensive cancer care and houses multidisciplinary teams that collaborate to provide a wide range of services, including medical oncology, radiation therapy, and supportive care.

Mary Hickey, Director of Oncology Services at UPMC, expressed her enthusiasm about the new equipment, stating, "The installation of these state-of-the-art linear accelerators is a game-changer for oncology patients in the region.
