UPMC Whitfield Hospital Launches Consultant-Led Medical Admissions Unit for Rapid GP Referrals
Waterford. Monday, 6 October, 2025. UPMC Whitfield Hospital has today launched a new Medical Admissions Unit (MAU) to provide rapid access to hospital-level care for patients referred directly by their GP. The consultant-led service is designed for urgent, non-life-threatening conditions and increases capacity and access to care for patients across Waterford, Wexford and South Tipperary.
Gwen Daniels, General Manager at UPMC Whitfield Hospital, said the new service will significantly enhance pathways for both patients and GPs across the South East: “This new Medical Admissions Unit ensures patients can access timely, expert care without the delays often associated with traditional hospital admissions. By streamlining the referral process and providing direct access to diagnostics and specialist oversight, we are improving both the patient journey and GP collaboration.”
The MAU is designed to deliver:
- Consultant-led assessment and oversight.
- Faster diagnosis and treatment.
- Rapid access to bloods, X-ray, CT, and MRI.
- Streamlined admission where hospitalisation is needed.
- Dedicated GP-specialist communication.
Ms. Daniels added: “Our goal is to reduce waiting times and improve the overall patient experience, while ensuring urgent medical issues are treated quickly and appropriately. We’re delighted to offer this new access point for care to people across the South East.”
Emergencies should continue to be directed to the nearest Emergency Department.
