UPMC and SETU Establish Carlow Pharmacy Technician Student Awards

Carlow, 12 November, 2024 - UPMC have announced a new collaboration with the South East Technological University (SETU) Carlow to recognise the essential contributions of Pharmacy Technicians within the Irish healthcare system.

UPMC recognised the exceptional academic achievements of two distinguished pharmacy technician students from SETU Carlow by awarding them bursaries during their recent graduation ceremony. Rebekah Corrigan, Pharmacy Technician Lead at UPMC presented the bursaries to students Svetlana Tomans from Kilkenny and Ally McGrath from Carlow, following their completion of SETU Carlow’s Level 7 Pharmacy Technician course.

David Phelan, Head of the Department of Applied Science at SETU Carlow, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration: “Pharmacy Technicians are a vital part of the Irish Healthcare System. At SETU, we are very proud of all our students, past and present, and we strive to support and develop them both during their time studying with us and in their careers afterwards. That is why I am incredibly happy with this collaboration with UPMC, which highlights the work of Pharmacy Technicians and the role they play in healthcare nationally. The opportunity to develop links with healthcare providers and work together to develop the field of Pharmacy, as well as to highlight the vital role our students play in healthcare in the region, is very exciting, and a great acknowledgement of their role in the healthcare sector.”

James Carr, Director of Pharmacy at UPMC Ireland, responded: “Across our four UPMC hospitals every day, we see the amazing dedication of our Pharmacy Technicians and their innovation, compassion, and commitment to patient safety and care excellence. SETU Carlow is recognised as one of the leading courses for training Pharmacy Technicians in Ireland. With the exciting announcement earlier this month of the establishment of a new school of Pharmacy in SETU, the ongoing and deepening collaboration between SETU and UPMC promises to be increasingly impactful in the coming years. UPMC is delighted to sponsor this award and we extend our congratulations to this year’s recipients and wish them every success and fulfilment as they embark on their careers as Pharmacy Technicians.”
