New Da Vinci Surgical Robot Enhances Care for Patients

UPMC Whitfield Hospital in Waterford has expanded its surgical capabilities with the introduction of a state-of-the-art Da Vinci robotic surgery system, further establishing the hospital as a leader in minimally invasive procedures in the South East.

The new robotics programme will initially support urology patients, specifically those undergoing prostatectomy and nephrectomy procedures. The advanced technology enhances precision, reduces recovery times, and improves outcomes for patients undergoing complex surgery.

Commenting on the new service, Gwen Daniels, General Manager, UPMC Whitfield Hospital, said: “The addition of robotic surgery at UPMC Whitfield Hospital represents our continued investment in delivering advanced, patient-centred care. By offering robotic procedures locally, we’re improving access to leading-edge treatment and reducing the need for patients to travel for specialist care.”

In the coming months, the robotic platform will also be used to support other specialties including colorectal and gynaecology, further broadening the scope of minimally invasive care available to patients across the region.

UPMC Whitfield Hospital continues to build on its reputation for innovation and excellence in surgical care, with the support of UPMC’s global expertise in academic medicine and technology-enabled health services.

Consultant Urologists at UPMC Whitfield Hospital are now offering robotic-assisted procedures for appropriate patients, and GPs wishing to refer patients for assessment or treatment can do so directly through Healthlink.
