Conditions We Treat
Our clinics treat and manage the following:
- Muscle and joint injuries from day-to-day activities. If you are experiencing muscle pain or stiffness of the joints, you should have a physiotherapy assessment. During the consultation the physiotherapist will complete a clinical assessment. The clinical assessment will review the functionality of the injured area and also assess the mechanism of injury. From this assessment the physiotherapist will give you a diagnosis and rehabilitation or refer you for further investigative tests.
- Sports and exercise injuries. Find treatment and rehab for strains, sprains, ligament tears, fractures, and more that will help you return to the activities you love.
- Concussion. This traumatic brain injury needs specialised care and detailed guidance for a safe return to play. Our nationwide concussion network ensures patients across the country can access the care they need.
Sports Medicine Training and Treatment Programmes
UPMC Sports Medicine offers a range of services delivered by a variety of experts across our network including, sports medicine physicians, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists and strength and conditioning coaches appointments.
Our sports medicine, physiotherapy, and psychological screening and programming services include:
- Sports medicine consultations at our UPMC Sports Medicine clinics.
- Meet with a specialist at the clinic and have the same-day diagnostic testing and diagnosis of your injury.
- Physiotherapy. Our physiotherapists will carry out an initial assessment and create a plan that will include exercises to improve function and mobility following an injury or surgery.
- Blood flow restriction rehabilitation. This approach uses a tourniquet system on the arm or leg. We use this to treat fractures, strains, nerve and joint injuries, and severe muscle or bone trauma. It also helps rehabilitation after surgery.
- Shockwave and Winback therapy. These techniques use energy waves to promote the body's natural healing processes and relieve pain.
- Sport-specific performance testing. These science-based tests look for potential risks and advise ways to achieve peak performance.
- Strength and conditioning. Our science-based training programmes help to build stamina and boost performance.
- Pre-season athlete and team screening. This approach prepares athletes for the upcoming season. It screens for injury risk, provides injury prevention tips, and performs baseline testing such as isokinetic testing and uses Vald equipment to get qualitative scores to help with injury prevention and rehabilitation.
- Biodex technology. This tool measures recovery progress for specific sports injuries. It provides objective data to inform decisions regarding the right time to return to play.
- Concussion care. Care includes baseline testing, post-injury testing, and rehabilitation services. Learn more about the UPMC Concussion Network in Ireland.
Team Training
Our experts can custom-build a team training programme to help with:
- Pre-season conditioning.
- In-season conditioning and strength training. Off-season training and conditioning.
- Dexa scans for body composition analysis.
- Functional movement and iskonetic screening for injury prevention strategies.
- Metabolic testing.
- VO2 max testing.
- IMPACT baseline concussion assessment.
Sports Performance Testing
We offer a series of tests that measure how an athlete's body performs during exercise and sports activity. These tests provide important quantitative data upon which coaches, trainers, or physiotherapists can build a customised plan for performance.
Functional Movement Screening
An in-depth functional movement assessment (FMA) may identify issues that prevent athletes from reaching their peak. Our experts will use data from the FMA to create a safe, scientifically based strength and conditioning programme that fits each athlete's unique needs. The FMA is a three-step process that measures an athlete's posture and walking/running gait, and based on this information, delivers a clinical evaluation on which a corrective exercise programme is developed.
The functional movement assessment analyses muscle imbalances that may hinder an athlete's ability to reach optimum performance or lead to injury. We use the term "functional" because we evaluate movement patterns specific to each sport, not muscle groups. The assessment involves:
- Gravity.
- Ground reaction forces.
- Mass and momentum.
- Three planes of motion.
